SEIZURES
03.2008 - Horse Seizure, Boucherville, Quebec
On a cold day in March, 2008, the SPCA Monteregie responded to a call about a barn full of hungry, neglected horses. The owner of the horses hadn’t been in weeks to care for them, so nearby workers chipped in and did what they could to keep the horses alive. Once inside, we discovered horses living in filthy box stalls, very hungry and very thirsty. Included in that barn were a mother horse and her one week old foal that had severe leg wounds that were infected. The baby would have died within a few days had we not stepped in and seek immediate medical care. With the advice of the veterinarian we had hired to write up medical reports on each horse, we sent the foal to St. Hyacinthe to be put on IV fluids with antibiotics to save her life. Shortly after, the mother was sent over so she could continue nursing her baby. It was pretty scary for the next couple of weeks, and we weren't sure the foal would survive.
All the horses were sent to different foster homes and rescues, however, the mare and her foal stayed for over a month at the veterinarian hospital. We are thrilled to say that the foal survived and is doing great and both mom and baby are together in a wonderful horse rescue.
Saving the foal did have a price. The total bill was over $3,500. Not one penny will be paid by either the negligent owner or the city, even though they are the ones that made the initial complaint.
If you would like to donate directly to the cost of this bill that saved the beautiful baby horses life, please do so by sending a check to the shelter indicating where you would like your donation to go.
We will keep you updated about this case.
Thank you for your support!
